MOOR? - THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A MOOR! - I AM AFRIKAN! I wrote: “There has never been any tribe or nation called moors, moor is just a general name like the name african or black.” Mansa Okike Bansu wrote: “I have a question my Brother. I have studied Igbo (Nigeria) culture for a decade. Igbo people have a culture that is somewhere between 8-6 thousand years old. Having lived among them (in Owerri/Imo and several other places in eastern Nigeria) I know full well that these folks have a documented account of “theirstory.” I have been blessed to interact with many of the top scholars on the Igbo past and I have read every major book on this subject. Why is it then that there is NO reference in an IGBO source to this group being called “Moors??” IF there is such a source, what is it?” I wrote: The Moors are never mentioned in history and I know why, it’s because there was no such group, only europeans called us moors. The term “Moors” has also been used as a general place name by europeans since the 4th century in European writing to refer to anyone of African descent, but Africans NEVER called themselves moors. Originally a descriptive term, Moors are not a distinct or self-defined people. There were dozens of dynasties of African descent and we all should understand that as well. Although the Moors came to be identified as Muslim, the term Mauri pre-dates Islam. It derives from the small Numidian Kingdom of Maure of the 3rd century BCE in what is now northern central and western part of Algeria and a part of northern Morocco. The name was applied to people of the entire region. “They were called Maurisi by the Greeks”, wrote Strabo, “and Mauri by the Romans.” During that age europeans did not call us by our ethnicities or nationalities, instead they called us the Mauri or Moors. Medieval Europeans applied the term to Africans who had been absorbed into the Almoravid dynasty, Almohad dynasty, and also the Abbasid Empire. Despite the fact that we clearly had names for ourselves, none of which was “MOORS”, europeans continued to call Africans from the Kingdom of Nekor, Idrisid Dynasty, Fatimid Caliphate, Miknasa Princes, Maghrawa, and even the Aghlabids who ruled in Sicily, “moors”. So again to be clear, AT NO TIME IN HISTORY DID WE CALL OURSELVES “MOORS”. A number of associated ethnic groups have been historically designated as “Moors” by europeans simply because they always want to ‘call us out of our names”, europeans will call you anything except your name, they’ll call you name like NIGGER, NEGRO, BLACK, MOOR, COON, and just about anything that pops into their little heads. If you will not accept being called a NIGGER or a COON then why would you accept being called a MOOR?
